The Power of Just Showing Up. How To Get Lucky
The Power of Just Showing Up. How To Get Lucky
Chasing our goals often feels hard, we procrastinate, we know that it’s something we want to do but we just can’t get ourselves to do the work. We often struggle to just get started. We often feel stressed, frustrated, too tired with lack of clarity and anything else seems to feel better than putting in the work to build the life we desire or to do what we know we’ll make our lives better.
First of all, is it something you really want? Make sure you aren’t feeling pressure from your friends, social group, or society to look a certain way, want certain things or pursue certain goals. If you’re healthy, satisfied, make enough money to not be paycheck to paycheck and what you want to do is to just relax and not stress then you do you. You probably already have what you want or do what you want. Maybe you’re trying to hustle to be able to retire so that you can hangout with your friends or just play video games every evening. But, maybe that’s what you’re already doing. Be happy!
But, if there is a goal, any goal, small or big, or you know you want more out of life then learn this: Show up!
If you already had it, it would be easy. There would be no need to grow or improve. You wouldn’t find joy in imagining yourself already having the end result. We view our goals as hard because we imagine the work it will take to accomplish it. The thing is, everything is work. Don’t let our nature and brain keep us safe, prevent us from achieving our dreams. The journey is part of the end result. Stop living in the future and make the best of your journey now. Learn to seize the moment.
The struggle, the procrastination, the lack of motivation, life getting on the way is part of the process. They are the obstacles on the way to test you and to provide the strength and tools to keep going.
The metal and physical struggle can often be your brain and body working toward a solution because we are naturally curious and goal oriented creatures.
Don’t let feelings or obstacles stop you from achieving your goals.
The answer to the best life is One Simple Trick. No, not Just Do It. More Like JUST SHOW UP!
Show up and try, even if that means doing one single thing for five minutes. Get to the treadmill. Write one sentence. Reach out to some clients. Cross one thing off the to do list. Once something is done, you can build on it. Once you get started, momentum can grow. When you show up, you can get lucky.
It doesn’t matter what it is; all aspects of our life benefit from this circumscribed kind of discipline. As long as you do something everyday, that is the important thing.
If you’re tired Show Up
If you don’t have to, you still Show Up
If it’s been kicking your ass lately, Show Up!
Consistency is a superpower masked as willpower built from discipline. Day to day willpower is incredibly rare. You cannot be great without the self discipline to do that. One thing a day adds up. Each day adds up.
But the numbers are only interesting if they accumulate in large quantities.
No matter what goal I’m pursuing, this is what has worked for me the best in order to stack on the one single most important habit of showing up.
- Set up a two to four hour timer everyday to work on your goal.
- Start working.
Do even one thing. If you can’t keep doing more for whatever reason, still keep the timer running. You will adapt and your brain will know that the timer means working on your goal. You will find yourself doing more than you thought you could as the days go on. Clarity will show up and you will start creating systems based on those two to four hours as you show up consistently everyday.
Simple as that. You will get lucky. Show up!
